Confusion over Olympic guards’ English ability
In mid-July it was announced that the British armed forces would have to provide 3,500 extra personnel for London Olympics security duties as a result of private security contractor G4S failing to recruit enough security guards in time for the Games. G4S chief executive Nick Buckles added to his embarrassment ______________ admitting he wasn’t sure whether the 10,000 security guards his firm recruited could speak English. Questioned by BBC Radio 4 on this, Buckles replied, ‘That is a difficult question to answer. They all have a right to work in the UK and have been vetted to very high standards,’ adding that he’d look into the issue. Interviewed by Sky News later that day, Buckles was able to report, ‘As part of the SIA [Security Industry Association] certification you have to be able to speak English. That’s the standard for the UK security industry.’
