Do you check your phone for text messages or e-mails during business meetings?
The University of Southern California has conducted research in which it was found out that co-workers feel annoyed when others check text messages and e-mails during business meetings. Moreover, according to data, older people and people with higher income are more likely to believe that this modern conduct is inappropriate. In order to unveil the behavior towards the use of smartphones in formal and informal meetings, the survey asked the participants about habits such as answering calls, writing or reading e-mails or text messages, browsing the internet and others during the aforementioned situations.
Around 80% of the participants consider these attitudes inappropriate during formal meetings, and at least 20% consider them inappropriate during any kind of meeting.
However, companies consider it important to be open and transparent about what is expected in the workplace.
Roger Lipson, an American manager, tells an interesting anecdote about one of his clients, who put a wicker basket at the entrance to his main conference room, along with a sign.
