Visitors to Hawali generally arrive at Honolulu International Airport. Many travel to the hotels and beaches of Waikiki. And there they often remain. But there is much more to Honolulu than beaches and boutique shops. The Hawalian capital is home to a lot of cultural attractions and beautiful scenery.
The birthplace of Barack Obama, Honolulu today mixes the relaxed pace of Pacific Island life with the excitement, commerce - and problems - of a modern American city. Home to almost one million people, the Hawaiian capital still has the feel of a town rather than a metropolis, however. It's expensive - because everything that arrives here is subject to excise taxes. The huge variety of restaurants represent the cultural mix of Honolulu, with many Japanese, Chinese, Thai and other Asian Cuisines. In fact, Native Hawalians and Pacific Islanders are very much minority here.
